This activity is all about trying to make learning relatable to your students, rather than forcing them to just learn about poets they cannot connect with. This is why Miss Cole decided to use J Cole (‘Change’) and Tupac (‘Changes’) songs for this lesson.

Students will:

  • Begin with a general overview of what it means to compare
  • Work in groups to unpick the songs using TSLAP (Questions are given to help aid students analysis of the songs)
  • Identify the similarities and differences between the songs
  • Have a class discussion
  • Complete a comparison essay (sentence starters provided and comparison flashcard)
