Turn on, tune in, swot up

Podcasts, as the name suggest, first came into being during the iPod era of the mid 2000s. Simply put, they’re radio shows distributed as lengthy audio files via the internet in the form of feeds you can subscribe to. Podcasts been available in both audio and video form for a while now, but it’s still the case that anyone can make their own – all you need is a computer, a mic, some free recording software and an internet connection.

The result is that there are thousands of podcasts out there, covering a multitude of specialist subjects – some produced by amateur enthusiasts, others by major broadcasters.

Here, we’ve rounded up a choice selection of education podcasts that offer a mix of engaging discussions, thought-provoking commentary on current issues affecting the teaching profession and practical advice.

Get connected

For the uninitiated, the easiest way to get into podcast listening is through Apple’s iTunes Store, which features a dedicated podcast section. Any that you subscribe to using your iTunes account can then be downloaded direct to your iPhone if you have one, and listened to on the go.

If you’re not an iPhone or iTunes user, you can usually subscribe to a podcast by entering its episode feed – the podcast equivalent of a web address – into an RSS reader such as Feedly and either play them through a web browser or download them for offline listening. If you have an Android smartphone, you can also enter a podcast’s feed into one of the many podcast apps available from the Google Play store – popular options include Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts and BeyondPod.
