The charity Child Bereavement UK has announced plans to make its ‘Supporting Bereaved Pupils’ e-learning programme available to 60 schools across the country free of charge.

Developed with input from educators and families, the programme aims to help schools meet the needs of grieving pupils and typically costs £250 per school. Already used by more than 3500 teachers and school staff, the move to roll out the programme to a further 60 minus any charge was made possible by a £15,000 grant from the UPS Foundation.

There are no restrictions in terms of how many teaching and support staff are able to use the programme, which requires an hour for each staff member to complete. Schools can also retain access to the programme and use it as ongoing resource.

According to Child Bereavement UK Chief Executive Ann Chalmers, “One in 29 school-age children is bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s a child in every class. Bereaved children spend most of their waking hours at school, yet in a recent survey, 80% of teachers told us they had received no bereavement training.”

Further details about Child Bereavement UK’s e-learning programme can be had by contacting 01494 568909 or visiting www.elearningschools.co.uk
