Review

Lemony Snicket’s story of a bad mood – rendered in the form of a glowering cloud by illustrator Matthew Forsythe – and its journey from person to person (and animal), is guaranteed to raise a smile, even if it might also raise an eyebrow along the way.

It begins simply enough with a little girl, Curly, whose failure to secure an ice cream is a downer your charges will quickly identify with; her brother, whom Curly pokes with a nearby stick to vent her frustration; and her mother – who subsequently inherits the bad mood from Curly.

From then on, things become a little surreal, not least the case of Lou, who, startled by a racoon, falls into a muddy puddle, then drops his dungarees into the launderette and insists on waiting in his pants (an act that later leads to his marriage to the proprietor, Mrs Durham…).

Your preschoolers will find much of it hilarious, though, and there are useful messages about grumpiness to convey along the way.
