Review

Winner of the inaugural Stratford-Salariya Picture Book Prize (held to uncover a picture book by a talented but unpublished author/illustrator – in this case, Camille Whitcher), this is a magical tale inspired by Asian folklore and the wonderful animated films of Studio Ghibli.

If you’ve seen any of the latter you will have an idea of what Luna and the Moon Rabbit looks like: its illustrations have a soft, dreamlike quality that will enchant children and adults alike, while the story – of a young girl and her nocturnal adventures with a giant rabbit who lives in the moon – will doubtless fire the imaginations of your charges.

If all this sounds like a story that’s tailor-made for bedtime, you’d be right – but the calming, mesmeric prose make it a great option for sharing in the cosy corner too, with those who may need a break from the hustle and bustle of a busy early years setting, or to help those feeling sleepy to unwind before nap-time.
