Empathy is one of those skills that everyone is keen to nurture in children, but which, neuroscientists now say, isn’t something they tend to have the cognitive ability fully to understand until they are eight or nine years old. Nonetheless, stories that encourage youngsters to see things from another’s point of view and consider their behaviour in terms of how it affects those around them can certainly help them make better decisions in the meantime. In this funny and touching tale, Olive the cat is given a ‘friendship hat’ by Joe the turtle; but it’s so ridiculous that all her other friends laugh at her when she wears it. Should she take it off and risk upsetting her chum, or ignore the teasing because the gift was given with love? It’s quite a sophisticated dilemma, bravely (and cheekily) resolved, and could open up some interesting discussions with your charges – what would they be prepared to put up with in order to keep a friend happy?
