Fans of The Firework Maker’s Daughter, by Philip Pullman, will love this gripping adventure from the pen of Jamie Smith.

Frost Fire, Smith’s debut, is a tale of courage and daring, set in a fantasy world with an icy Tibetan theme.

It centres around a strong, feisty heroine, Sabira, who must prove herself by taking a dangerous journey into the snowy mountains to bond with a magical frostsliver.

But when a terrible avalanche threatens her survival, Sabira, with help from the sentient glacier, must find a different way home, facing up to the merciless mountain.

Drawing on the themes of family loyalty, loss and resilience, Frost Fire is a great read for Y5 and Y6 children.

If you’re studying mountains, this story would be an excellent way in to the topic.

The book is available in two different coloured versions of the cover, illustrated by Karl James Mountford.
