Review

Secrets are a thorny issue in any educational setting, and perhaps especially so when the children involved are of an age when they are probably still struggling to understand the idea of boundaries at all, let alone their own, and others’, right to privacy. Trust is a vital element of building meaningful relationships, of course – but at the same time, every practitioner knows that a promise ‘not to tell’ is at best a risky and disingenuous way of encouraging confidences. Here, Anna Kang brilliantly unpicks the issues involved as she introduces Monty, a little frog with a big secret: he can’t swim. By framing the narrative entirely as a dialogue between Monty and the reader, Kang cleverly places the latter in the position of a trusted adviser and friend, encouraging the anxious amphibian to share his hidden concern with those who are in the best position to help him do something about it – in this case, his parents. It’s an endearing tale in its own right, and a fantastic way of enabling youngsters to think about a familiar situation from different angles, test out various responses and, perhaps, empower themselves to seek out help if they have a secret of their own.
