Review

Reuben and Felix are best friends, whose favourite thing in the world to do is to blow bubbles. However, when their game becomes a competition, things quickly get out of hand. A cynical reader might wonder if there’s deliberate satire here; after all, the young chums are playing, learning and discovering together perfectly happily until it suddenly become important to measure which of them has the higher attainment. At that point, increasingly complicated machinery is introduced to boost achievement, and an external body of judges brought in to ensure accurate and rigorous assessment. The fun is sucked out of the activity entirely, because all that matters is being the best. In fact, success becomes so important that the protagonists are even driven to cheating, in order to produce the most impressive results. It’s only when the overworked machines collapse and the bubbles burst that Reuben and Felix realise how silly they’ve been, rediscover what’s important, and achieve truly wonderful things by collaborating, joyfully. Who would have thought it?
