What is it?

This set of fun science activities for playtimes encourages children to explore the world around them – and develop scientific skills.

Written by PSTT Fellows Tom Holloway and Ruth Shallcross, Playground Science offers purpose and enjoyment to playtime while supporting learning in science.

The resource provides:

  • Five drawstring bags: Navy blue, turquoise, pink, orange and apple green – with space to add a bespoke label to the front of the bag: with the topic, class name, etc.
  • Five activity cards: with initial ideas and questions on one side, and a follow-up activity on the back, which are designed to encourage children to work more scientifically.
  • A teacher guide

Playground Science has two age ranges:

Lower Primary: For younger children (4-7)

Upper Primary: For older children (7-11)

Simple to use, teachers fill the individual bags with an activity card and accompanying equipment, then pass the rucksack to the children who can go outside and start exploring.

Playground Science can be enjoyed by individual children or as a group, and the equipment required can mostly be sourced from within the school; many of the items are commonly used in science or maths.

“Children can follow the suggestions included or make their own decisions about what to do.”
