Language Educators Online (LEO) is the new, free, online professional learning platform created specifically for languages teachers by languages teachers, working with senior leaders and subject experts.
LEO has been developed by the National Consortium for Languages Education (NCLE): the Department for Education’s flagship programme for languages, led by UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council and the Goethe-Institut (Germany’s national cultural institute).
1. Professional learning for languages teachers
LEO offers languages teachers a comprehensive collection of online modules designed to build your knowledge and understanding of effective language teaching and learning, informed by the latest evidence and most reliable sources, which you can approach systematically in the order you choose.
2. Modular, accessible, flexible and user-focused resources
LEO launches with a focus on Languages Leadership – recognising the role we have as teachers and schools to lead on positive change in languages education – alongside three ‘curated pathways’ focusing on the Expert View (stimulating think pieces and guided learning featuring leading experts and practitioners), AI and EdTech with leading MFL tech expert Joe Dale, and an Introductory Pathway developed by the Goethe-Institut, Germany’s cultural institute.
“LEO exemplifies how theory translates to practice.”
3. Join LEO for connection and collaboration
LEO offers an online meeting place for knowledge exchange and advanced professional learning, connecting you with a national community of practice. This will be complemented by webinars and teach meets and other opportunities to connect with colleagues across the country.
4. Research-based, classroom-informed CPD
We aim to develop teacher agency through reflexive practice – founded on research-informed, evidence-based practice from contemporary classrooms and leveraging UCL Institute of Education’s world-leading research base.
LEO exemplifies how theory translates to practice, offering recorded interviews with senior leaders, practising teachers and pupils from across the NCLE Network.
5. Regular fresh updates
Further modules will launch in phases during the academic year and will be regularly refreshed with outputs from NCLE’s National Priority Projects: school-led projects driving change and addressing regional and local needs through research-informed action in schools.
