David Cameron Announces 31 New Free Schools

Outgoing PM confirms details of new schools that will offer 20,000 places between them

David Cameron made his final visit as Prime Minister today, stopping by Reach Academy Feltham to announce the names of a further 31 successful free school applications.

The approvals were made as part of an ongoing fast-track process, with details of further successful applications due to made in the coming months. The list includes a number of established academy trusts, among them the Great Schools Trust, the Brent Specialist Academy Trust (which is set to open The Avenue, a schools catering for pupils with ASD and complex needs) and Reach, which will be opening a second school in Hounslow, with a focus on early years intervention inspired by the non-profit Harlem Children’s Zone organisation in New York.

Cameron commented, ‘More than 300 [free schools] have been created since I became Prime Minister and 200 are set to open meaning tens of thousands more young people, many from disadvantaged areas, finally have a choice of a good education that helps them reach their full potential.

‘I am proud of what this government has achieved, working with heads and teachers to raise standards so that our young people have the best possible start in life.’

According to government sources, ‘many’ of the successful applicants are due to open their new schools by September 2017, and will be confirming sites in due course.
