This writing dialogue KS2 resource pack will help you guide children through the process of analysing a dramatic scene from Sharna Jackson’s brilliant novel The Good Turn.

It will help them select suitable techniques to progress plot using dialogue in a vivid scene of their own.

The ability to compose realistic dialogue is useful in the telling of stories. It can help readers to feel genuinely engaged with the characters and therefore more involved in the unfolding events.

Creating dialogue that not only feels ‘right’, but also introduces and develops plot points is a mark of really strong writing. It puts the reader in the scene. They witness the events through the reactions of the fictional participants. This is rather than telling the reader what’s happening in more explicit ways.

This writing dialogue KS2 resource will enhance any broader study of the novel. You can also use the extract as a means for teaching a notoriously tricky authorial technique. (And it might even inspire children to read the novel!)

About the extract

The Good Turn introduces us to the super-ambitious Josie and her friends Margot and Wesley. They’re the founding-members of a new, scouts-inspired club dedicated to good deeds and mystery-solving in contemporary Luton.

The extract here centres on some unsanctioned camping and a dramatic discovery. This eventually, leads to the main focus of the book.

The scene here does not require much knowledge of the story. Josie is the first-person narrator and her friends Wesley and Margot are inclined to argue with each other.

They have all agreed to camp overnight to observe some mysterious lights that have been appearing in a long-abandoned factory in their neighbourhood.

Of course, the scene will be all the more gripping if the children are invested in the main characters and their developing club.

Sharna Jackson’s The Good Turn is published by Penguin. Christine Chen and Lindsay Pickton are primary education advisors (primaryeducationadvisors.co.uk), supporting English development nationally. Browse more WAGOLL packs from real authors.
