KS4 Geography Lesson – How Would you Spend $300m Developing a Fictional African Country?

Key Stage

KS4

Age

Years 10-11

Subjects

In this lesson your students will study the fictional country of Kurbina Foso, a large country in a tropical region of the world.

It is one of the world’s least developed countries.

The country is divided into four major physical zones:

  • The tropical rainforest
  • The savanna zone
  • The Jalos Highlands
  • The semi-desert

The Assignment

Kurbina Foso has been awarded £150 million of international aid to help the country develop.

In addition, several developed countries have announced that they will ‘write off’ the money that they are owed by Kurbina Foso, so long as it uses the money saved to develop the country responsibly.

This adds up to a total of $300 million.

You have been appointed to advise the Kurbinan government on the best way forward. The plan is to take between 20 and 30 years, and the aim is to set the country on the road to a more developed future.

Several schemes have been proposed. You may also devise others that you think would be appropriate.
