The story of Mary Anning, an unassuming 19th century lady who combed the beaches of Devon, can provide an exciting starting point for some excellent hands-on learning and insightful formative assessment. Even though Mary Anning, one of the first great palaeontologists, has been named by the Royal Society as one of the ten most influential women in scientific history, many children (and some adults) have never encountered this impressive individual who had a thirst for scientific discovery and a passion for bones.
