What are some of the benefits of purposeful play for students and teachers, both academically and non-academically?

Play is natural – when you see a child playing, you see a child learning.

Purposeful play is rooted in pedagogical approaches such as inquiry-based learning, which are known to improve student learning outcomes.

It encourages students to systematically explore, experiment and continually iterate to find solutions or new approaches to problems, or even just investigate a new idea.

Students benefit from all opportunities to connect ideas, nurture creativity, and apply their knowledge and skills. Playful learning experiences provide a way for students to naturally discover and engage in these learning experiences.

Learning through play is often referred to as an approach that “levels the playing field”; what is it about purposeful play that has such a positive impact on accessibility?

Play levels the playing field by meeting every student where they are, regardless of their background or prior experiences.

Play also allows students to draw their own conclusions based on their experience, without a need to define right and wrong answers.
