30 Second Briefing

Become mini archaeologists and curators at the Roman Baths!

Our award-winning Clore Learning Centre brings pupils of all abilities closer to history as they engage in hands-on activities, explore underground chambers and dig for history in the new Investigation Zone.

1. Learn where it really happened

The Roman Baths is one of the finest historic sites in Northern Europe. Located in the heart of the city of Bath, it consists of the remarkably preserved remains of one of the greatest religious spas of the ancient world.

Visitors can still walk on the original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva.

2. Discover our pioneering new learning space

Opened in 2022, the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre is a state-of-the-art and fully accessible building.

It features two dedicated learning spaces, a pioneering Investigation Zone and an underground tunnel which creates a dramatic route into the Roman Baths (unique to learning groups). There is also a lunchroom, storage and toilets.

3. Unearthing Aquae Sulis

The KS2 session, Unearthing Aquae Sulis – Life in a Roman Town, is an immersive session led by a workshop leader. Investigate artefacts left behind by the Romans, create Roman-inspired mosaic artwork, and dress up like a Roman before exploring the Investigation Zone.

“Opened in 2022, the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre is a state-of-the-art and fully accessible building.”

4. Dig for history

In the Investigation Zone is a new learning space set in an atmospheric underground environment amidst real, in-situ Roman remains.

Here, children will be able to explore, investigate and record archaeological materials in hands-on and experiential ways.

5. A warm welcome for all

Teachers will benefit from a stress-free visit with state-of-the-art cloakroom facilities and lunchroom.

The centre is also fully accessible. Multisensory activities cater for all abilities, and our facilities include an accessible bathroom with a hoist.
