When it comes to learning about another country, it really is very difficult to embrace its climate, locations and environments without actually going there. As a result, a lot of geography teaching becomes fact based and, ever so sadly, photocopiable. While this is in some ways inevitable, it doesn’t mean that geography lessons can’t be experiential.
Experiential learning is the key to unlocking important concepts in primary learning. Facts are, of course, very important when learning about the humanities. But if facts are not made relevant to children, they easily become lost in the soup of modern day childhood. This lesson on survival involves placing children in role as air crash survivors struggling against the elements in unfamiliar territory – while avoiding a Lord of the Flies scenario!
