This Jolly Phonics order sheet was created by teacher and Jolly Phonics author Sue Lloyd. It will provide you with a clear structure for how to teach Jolly Phonics letter sounds and skills.
Alongside this, this teaching steps sheet also contains teaching tips and advice for the order of teaching reading and writing with Jolly Phonics.
Jolly phonics order
There are seven steps covered on this PDF, with each one split into reading and writing.
Step 1, for example, is as follows:

Step 1 | Teach letter sounds from Groups 1 – 3 Blend regular words that use the letter sounds e.g. in, hot, bus etc | Teach letter sounds from Groups 1 – 3 and how to write them Develop the ability to hear the sounds in words – holding up a finger for each sound |
By the time you reach step 7, you will be teaching:
- the alternative magic ‘e’ long vowels and blending/dictating regular words/sentences that contain these vowels e.g. ape, these, fine, home, tube
- tricky words 21 – 40 and how to spell them
