An explanation text is a piece of writing whose general purpose is to inform its reader of how something works. It might also explain how the reader might carry out a process.
Whereas a simple information text might tell the reader about the existence of something, an explanation text explains how or why that thing came to be in existence. These are sometimes known as explanatory texts.
