Talking rubbish – reduce playground litter with these bins that talk back

Garbage verbiage

It’s never too early to instil responsible attitudes to littering – but what if, instead of just being told to put their rubbish in a bin by an adult, children were thanked for doing so by the bin itself?

That’s the headline feature of these lockable waste receptacles from British company Amberol. Made from recyclable polyethylene, they’re available in a choice of animal shapes, including robins, chicks and bears, as well as the penguins shown here, with capacities ranging from 90 to 180 litres.

Once in position, the light sensors installed in their openings can be made to trigger a selection of messages, such as ‘Thanks for your litter’, ‘Yum yum feed me more’ and ‘That’s the best meal I’ve had today’. Schools also have the option to record custom greetings of their own.

According to Amberol’s MD, Patience Atkinson-Gregory, “We have received great feedback, with headteachers and staff reporting a substantial reduction in litter. We hope that using these bins will develop good habits that will last a lifetime.” For more information, contact sales@amberol.co.uk or visit www.amberol.co.uk
