1. Free, interactive careers gallery for KS3 and KS4
Introduce pupils to a world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers with a visit to Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery at the Science Museum, London.
On a visit to the free, interactive gallery, pupils will learn about vital technical careers that help to save lives, make energy greener, create everyday items we couldn’t live without and more. They’ll create visual effects on a blockbuster filmset, analyse blood samples in a medical laboratory and fix faults on top of a wind turbine.
Pupils will explore technical careers within creative arts, health science, manufacturing and renewable energy. They’ll learn about careers they haven’t heard of before, using hands-on exhibits that have been created in collaboration with Marvel Studios, the NHS, the National Grid and many others.
To support planning, teachers can book their trip through the museum’s online group booking portal, where they can check live availability and build an itinerary.
Teachers can also download the Technicians gallery guide, which includes a map of the gallery, key objects not to be missed and questions to discuss with a group during a visit.
2. Free, 60-minute careers sessions
Enhance your visit to the Technicians gallery with a free, 60-minute Careers Uncovered session for KS3 and KS4 groups. Pupils will meet real-life technical professionals from top organisations in the UK and find out what it’s like to do their jobs.
They’ll take part in careers-based challenges and Q&A sessions where they’ll learn more about STEM career options, the impact that different roles have, and the skills needed to pursue them.
Sessions are planned around key moments in the academic calendar, including Black History Month, Green Careers Week and National Apprenticeship Week.
By the end of the session, pupils should be able to recognise their own skills, identify what they enjoy and understand how this can help them to build a fulfilling career. The sessions will also help in achieving the Gatsby’s Good Career Guidance Benchmarks by providing opportunities for pupils to meet employees and experience different workplace environments.
