Maximise Revision For Every Student With ACUK

For many students, the lead up to examination periods can be an incredibly stressful time, whether they are preparing for SATs, GCSEs or A-levels. The weight of exam results seems to increase every year and students may feel under enormous pressure not to let themselves, their parents or their teacher down.

At ACUK we make revision more enjoyable, more fruitful and far less stressful. Our modern, purpose-built activity centres provide a welcome change of scenery from the classroom environment. Couple this with our exhilarating adventure activities which increase focus during revision time and we think you have a recipe for exam success!

So, what is it that makes the ‘recipe’ work?

  1. A different environment
Our centres provide an enriching and exciting change of environment. Set in inspiring outdoor surroundings, many students experience a literal ‘breath of fresh air’ during a stay with us. We have flexible, light and comfortable meeting rooms that are easily transformed into a classroom space or, if preferred, a more informal environment, to allow students the freedom to study and revise in a way the normal classroom environment cannot provide.

  2. Exercise and adventure
It is well documented that even half an hour of moderate exercise per day can stimulate a number of key factors:
    • Sharpened focus. Dr John Ratey, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, suggests that even relatively short sessions of exercise can improve focus for 2-3 hours afterwards. Couple an adventure session with an informal revision session and you will see a greater level of focus and effective learning.
    • Enhanced mood and memory. Exercise releases endorphins. This is a simple and well-known fact. These endorphins improve mood and they also improve memory, which is key for maximising revision.

  3. Improved self-belief
Our teams are trained to help every student grow in confidence, overcome fears and face challenges head on during our activity sessions. Whether it’s stepping off of a zip-wire platform, leaning back on an abseiling tower, or working as a team to build a buoyant raft, the benefits are better self-awareness, self-confidence and self-belief. These fresh realisations help students ‘believe in themselves’ when coming to revision sessions, doing away with feelings of helplessness and inability.

  4. Healthy meals
The brain uses energy when revising and unless our bodies are fed correctly it can be difficult to find the energy and focus needed for effective study. We provide three healthy meals per day during a stay, ensuring that students have the fuel needed for meaningful study and adventure activities.

  5. Fun!
Needless to say, students have a lot of fun during a revision residential trip! Whether it’s the excitement of the activities, getting to know classmates better or discovering the joy of learning something new, having fun will inspire and motivate your students and have a lasting impact on the classroom.

  6. Enriched relationships
These trips create positive learning experiences for students and provide an excellent opportunity for teachers to improve their relationship with their class. This can have a number of positive impacts after returning to school. Whether the trip has been the opportunity to build bridges with a disruptive individual or a source of practical examples to demonstrate physical equations, the benefits of a revision residential go beyond the life of the stay itself. A trip like this really is an investment in the future!

Releasing potential in all

If we had to sum up what the key benefit for a teacher looking to invest in a revision residential really is, we suggest that such a trip will ‘condense success’ (that is that they enable everyone to achieve more in a shorter period of time). The mixture of a new environment, exercise, adventure, fresh self-belief, nutritious meals and fun means that there is great potential for students to experience a level of focus beyond what is available in most school environments.
