Primary school children at a First LEGO League day

FIRST® LEGO® League, from the IET, is an exciting STEM programme for primary and secondary school children aged between 6 and 9 and 9 and 16. The programme rapidly helps children to develop their teamwork, design, programming and communication skills.

Children can feel proud of what they have achieved, encouraging them to continue engaging with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

FIRST® LEGO® League Explore

FIRST® LEGO® League Explore, for primary school children aged 6 to 9, introduces coding and real-world themes and encourages children to work on their problem-solving and teamwork.

It is delivered either in-class or as a team of six. For the teams of six, they receive a kit based around the UNEARTHED℠ theme that contains all the tools required to participate in the challenges, such as digital notebooks, one digital meeting guide for the coach, and a digital certificate, as well as medals, lanyards and the LEGO®.

For the Explore class pack, they receive the above, one for each student in the class who is involved in the programme, plus an extra digital meeting guide for an additional coach.

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, for children aged 9 to 16, introduces a robotics-based life-skills competition allowing children to develop future workplace skills. They learn real-world research, coding and design.

The FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge can be delivered in class or as a team of 10, and can be run as a challenge tournament where teams work towards competing at a regional event with the opportunity to qualify for national or international finals.

Alternatively, it can be delivered as a class pack, where teachers hold a class tournament within the curriculum, or as a large group, working towards an in-house event.

Interested in participating in this next school year’s theme?

The theme for 2025–2026 is UNEARTHED℠. Teams can dig in and build archaeology-inspired LEGO® and learn how technology can unearth our past. Watch this short video for more information on what to expect for this new season.

Previous participants of the programmes have shared how FIRST® LEGO® League provides “creativity, resilience, and coding skills all learnt through LEGO®”, describing it as an “excellent programme” offering “brilliant engagement with students” and “such a confidence booster”.
