Paul Jones answers some of the key questions senior leaders ask us when reviewing KS4 vocational qualifications and explains how Cambridge Nationals support curriculum intent, delivery and performance…
Cambridge Nationals are practical Level 1/Level 2 qualifications for students aged 14–16 years. They sit alongside GCSEs and count in the KS4 performance tables in England. They engage mixed‑ability cohorts and combine real‑world learning with clear specifications, classroom‑based coursework and a comprehensive package of teaching and assessment support.
Why do Cambridge Nationals work well within a balanced KS4 curriculum?
We designed Cambridge Nationals to complement GCSEs, offering an applied, skills‑based pathway without narrowing future options. Each qualification is the same size as a GCSE and supports Progress 8, allowing schools to broaden curriculum choice while maintaining accountability.
Because they’re available as combined Level 1/Level 2 qualifications, students of different abilities can follow the same course and achieve outcomes that reflect their individual performance.
How do they support inclusion and student engagement?
Our qualifications are built around practical, real‑world contexts that help students see the relevance of what they’re learning. Coursework is completed in the classroom under teacher supervision, which removes some of the pressure of formal exam conditions and gives students the opportunity to show what they know and can do.
We also allow one opportunity to resubmit the same assignment within the academic year for each NEA unit, supporting reflection, improvement and progress.

What does delivery look like for teachers?
Our specifications are clear and consistent, so you can plan with confidence. Teachers have access to a wide range of free planning and teaching resources, including schemes of work, curriculum planners, assessment guides and real candidate exemplars, all available via our secure platform, Teach Cambridge.
Our qualifications are also supported by endorsed textbooks from Cambridge and Hachette Learning.
What expert support is available to schools?
Throughout delivery, our subject advisor teams are on hand to offer guidance and reassurance. We also have a programme of professional development, including live and on‑demand training covering internal assessment, NEA delivery and moderation.
Together, this support helps departments build confidence and maintain consistency year on year.
How are Cambridge Nationals supported beyond the classroom?
After results, we have services such as Active Results and Access to Scripts to support analysis and improvement planning. We’ve also got an option‑evening toolkits that includes student‑ and parent‑facing materials, helping you communicate clearly and support informed subject choices.
