Make objects magical with Joan Haig

Episode 13

33 mins

Help children see how ordinary things can become the centre of big adventures with this writing unit based on a virtual author visit.

This teaching sequence uses an episode of the Author in Your Classroom podcast, in which Joan Haig talks about where her ideas come from. The plot for Joan’s debut novel, Tiger Skin Rug originated from a single object, and learning about this helps children see how ordinary things can become the centre of big adventures. Suddenly, magical objects feel possible, not just fictional.

Teaching overview
Across four sessions, children create adventure stories centred on magical objects. They explore story ideas from memories, family tales, and everyday items, and discuss famous magical objects from traditional and modern stories. Planning begins with selecting an object and imagining its powers.

Next, pupils focus on rich description. Haig’s model text shows expanded noun phrases, sensory detail, similes, and precise vocabulary. Children practise bringing objects to life, emphasising feelings and tiny details.

The third session covers narrative structure. Pupils plot journeys sparked by their magical objects, choosing destinations, companions, mysteries, and key events. First-person writing boosts immediacy and emotion.

Finally, pupils edit and redraft, using peer feedback to improve. A working wall captures ideas, vocabulary, and model phrases throughout the unit.
