Build fantasty worlds with Jamie Littler - PowerPoint, planning sheets and more
This writing unit starts with a virtual author visit featuring Jamie Littler, author of the Frostheart series.
Via an episode of the Author In Your Classroom podcast, Littler shares his journey and gives children insider tips on crafting fantasy worlds. Playing these podcast sections brings Littler’s voice straight into the classroom. Pupils hear him read from Frostheart, explore ‘show not tell’, and discover fun ways to start stories.
Teaching overview
This sequence is designed to help KS2 children create their own fantasy worlds and write stories set within them. Sessions encourage imagination while keeping writing fun.
Pupils begin with ‘What if…’ scenarios inspired by games or unusual ideas, like worlds where no one touches the ground. Working in pairs or small groups, they brainstorm settings, map out key locations, and consider how their worlds fit with our own. Planning sheets and PowerPoint prompts guide them while keeping creativity flowing.
Next, children study Littler’s descriptions of the Lurkers from Frostheart, learning to use adjectives, verbs, and sensory details to bring characters and settings to life. They then write their own stories, making full use of their new worlds. Emphasis is placed on rich detail, consistent voice, and showing rather than telling.
Finally, children share their work, get feedback, and refine their stories. The unit encourages them to keep creating, whether expanding their first fantasy world or inventing a new one. Listening to Jamie Littler’s advice about persistence, passion, and fun leaves them motivated and inspired.
