This 3-week sequence for upper KS2 is a sample resource from No Nonsense Literacy, where the key learning outcome is to write a story about overcoming a monster, using Beowulf by Kevin Crossley-Holland.
In it, you will share with pupils the blueprint of an overcoming-the-monster story (an example is included), and model how to elaborate at each point and talk through a story.
Pupils should then do this in pairs, before writing their own story.
It covers reading, writing, grammar and spoken language.
No Nonsense Literacy is an online programme combining teaching sequences for writing with assessment support and guidance for all your planning and assessment needs. Download more of its resources here or on its website at nononsenseliteracy.co.uk.
