More than 900 million cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry are reared in the UK each year for food production, along with many millions of farmed fish. Does your class know where their food comes from?
Introduce your young learners to the topic of farm animal welfare. Where our food comes from, the needs of farm animals and how we can be compassionate citizens and make ethical choices to help improve the welfare of animals reared for food.
In this lesson, pupils consider how they can help consumers make informed choices about farm animal products. They look at examples of adverts, labelling and packaging for information as to how the animal has been kept.
Posters are produced to highlight the conditions in which the farm animals could have been kept and how consumers can make ethical choices. The lesson ‘A Little Eggs-tra Space’ could provide some useful background information.
