Review

The wonderful Lauren Child has never yet missed the mark – and she hits the spot once again here, as she tackles the issue of moving from the role of only child to older sibling with her customary, irresistible combination of wit, affection and empathy. Elmore Green’s life is going splendidly well and he is the funniest, cleverest, most adorable person his parents have ever seen, until one day, a new, small person arrives and changes everything. The small person steals the spotlight, watches the wrong TV programmes, squashes and knocks over precious toys and, most worryingly of all, wants to be just like Elmore. Child captures perfectly the sense of bewildered displacement experienced by a youngster who is having to share his home and parents for the first time – acknowledges it, and then gently reveals the subtle, but profound joys that this new relationship will bring by way of compensation.
