Review

Hannah Gold is 17 years old, and has been treated like a grown-up by her successful, professional parents for as long as she can remember.

Now, however, following the death of her friend Agnes under circumstances that are not entirely clear, she has been checked into a remote treatment facility, confined to a single room while the medical and judicial communities decide on her future.

Has there been a mistake? Or is there more to our protagonist’s history that even she herself realises?

As a narrator, Hannah is as irresistible as she is unreliable; viewing her situation and the characters around her with a piercing and sardonic intelligence, yet fundamentally vulnerable in ways that are only gradually revealed as we edge closer to understanding the reality of what is happening to her.

Sheinmel is clear that her aim is not to educate about mental illness – but there’s a journey of discovery here, nonetheless.
