Review

Everyone knows that rabbits love carrots – but the protagonist of this funny little fable takes his affection for his favourite treat much too far. Not only does he fill his home so full of the orange-coloured root vegetables that there is no longer any room for him to live inside it, but when his friends Tortoise, Bird, Squirrel and Beaver realise his predicamant and offer to let him stay with them, he foolishly destroys each of their tiny houses in turn by insisting on bringing his crunchy collection with him. Finally, Rabbit realises that friends are much more important than material possessions, and he shares both his dwelling, and his carrots, with his pals – who are an extremely forgiving bunch, apparently, given that his earlier selfishness has left all of them homeless. Katy Hudson’s illustrations are a delight, especially the fantastic range of expressions she is able to bring to her characters’ faces – and her prose is easy and fun to read, bouncing along at a lively pace with plenty of opportunities for children to join in with crashes and squeals. In short, all the ingredients are here for this book to become a real favourite.
