Review

Laurence Anholt is best known as one half of the husband and wife team responsible for writing and illustrating more than 200 hugely popular children’s books; this is his first venture into storytelling for young adults – and it is breathtaking. Told through the voices of Jack, an Irish hypnotist and psychologist who has left his native shores to take up a professorship at a southern American university and Pip, a 13-year-old black orphan who has been hired by a white couple to help out on their farm nearby, the tale unfolds across the intense, heat-infused backdrop of the US southern states in the 1960s, where racial and sexual bigotry prevails, violence is always simmering just beneath the surface, the distant war in Vietnam is a constant shadow over people’s lives, and cruelty and injustice are clothed in white robes to protect an illusion of respectability. Anholt’s writing is both beautiful and compelling, and the story ideal for group reading and discussion. Brilliant – and important.
