Review

Eleven-year-old Alex Petroski is in many ways the kind of narrator we seem to be meeting increasingly often: literally minded, eternally curious, passionate about science, unworldly and strangely unaware of other people’s motivations and complexities. However, there is something especially touching and memorable about his story – told in a series of transcriptions of recordings Alex makes with the intention of launching them, stored on his Golden iPod, into space. This narrative device gives the reader unfiltered access to Alex’s voice, allowing the nuances of his character and strangeness of his situation to be unfolded gradually, whilst simultaneously establishing a strong emotional link pretty much from page one. From the publishers that brought us Wonder and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – and recalling both works at times – this is an original and highly compelling read; heartbreaking on occasions, but ultimately uplifting.
