Review

Lion and Mouse are best friends, but eventually the big cat’s habit of boasting about how much taller, stronger and louder he is drives his tiny but faithful friend away – and it’s only when he finds himself facing a fear that mere physical bulk isn’t enough to vanquish that the pair are reunited, with the diminutive rodent’s inner strength and courage having come to the rescue of his humbled chum. Much as we might like to think otherwise, children do start to compare themselves with their peers from an early age – not to mention with heroes and heroines from TV and films – and it’s easy for them to reach uncomfortable conclusions about their own value based purely on superficial qualities. Lion and Mouse is fun to read, and it also reinforces a positive message about sharing differences and looking beneath the surface to find true worth. Result!
