Review

The premise of this sharply imagined story is both terrifying – and chillingly believable. Set in a not-too-distant future, it presents a society in which the notion of justice has become conflated with the false democracy of reality TV shows; judges and juries have been abolished, and those charged with serious crimes are at the mercy of a seven-day, prime time process during which the general public is encouraged to call premium rate lines to decide if they are guilty or innocent. When Martha Honeydew confesses to killing a popular celebrity, she becomes the first female teenager to experience this version of death row – but did she really shoot Jackson Paige? And if not, what is she trying to achieve by saying she did? Drewery’s narrative is as jumpy as her protagonists – flashing between voices and tenses with little warning, in a way that’s unsettling at first but makes increasing sense as the implications of her dystopian vision reveal themselves. It’s thought-provoking fodder, and a love story, for the X-Factor generation.
