Review

Dragons, Vikings, and the triumph of wit and audacity over brute force all have a part to play in the success of this fascinating and slightly quirky story set in Ireland, around a thousand years ago. Brian may be the smallest in his village, but he’s also the cleverest – and so, when enemies arrive, bent on destruction, it’s his quick thinking that saves the day as he comes up with a cunning plan to defeat them using their own fears, of fire-breathing, winged monsters, against them. Chris Judge wastes very few words as he conveys the action with pace and enthusiasm, and Mark Wickham’s illustrations are lively and original. The fact that ‘Brian’ is actually Brian Boru, the little boy who would grow up to become High King of Ireland, can add another level of interest for your charges, allowing you to introduce and start to explore ideas about mythology and history, and how the two so often intertwine. What other historical figures might they have heard of, and what stories do they know about their exploits?
