Review

Brush up your piratical accent before you dive into this deliberately disgusting offering from author Lucy Coats, with the wonderful Chris Mould on illustrator duty. Coats’ fabulous use of language makes this tale of the world’s grubbiest and smelliest seafarer a total delight to read aloud – despite the unrelenting hideousness of Captain Beastie’s habits and personal hygiene. There’s nothing like some sanctioned nose-picking and food-smearing to get a junior audience enthusiastic about a new book, and it’s even more thrilling when the revolting individual in question is actually supposed to be in charge, so be prepared for this one to enter the ‘most requested’ list pretty quickly. Although after its first outing, you might need to have a full and frank discussion with everyone about exactly when ‘Now you don’t smell of poo!’ is, and isn’t, an acceptable alternative ending to the more traditional lyrics for ‘Happy birthday to you…’
