Storytelling in schools is important. It is one of the most natural forms of communications and inspires purposeful thinking, encourages communication and develops listening skills.
Storytelling doesn’t need to be confined to the traditional classroom, why not take it outdoors? Outdoor learning helps to increase motivation and concentration levels, especially for those who struggle within the classroom. Creativity can thrive in the outdoors, and it offers an opportunity for bonding and developing friendships.
There are a number of products available to help engage children in outdoor storytelling and to create a designated area where children can read and listen. Outdoor storytelling provides more opportunities to involve children within the storytelling and to make lessons more memorable.
A dedicated outdoor reading area can be defined by using an outdoor classroom or canopy.
Outdoor reading zones provide an area to engage in outdoor learning and storytelling without depending on the weather, allowing for outdoor storytelling all year round. The Barge classroom is ideal for outdoor storytelling but can also be used for imaginative play during break times.
Seating, such as a Storyteller’s Chair determines a prime spot for children to share stories. Children can take turns to sit in the Storyteller’s Chair, which helps to improve self-confidence as they communicate with each other. The Hand Made Places Storyteller’s Chair can be combined with a Block or Modular Radius seating to produce an outdoor Story Circle. Story Circles offer an area for groups to sit together, get involved and share tales.
Outdoor playground equipment sculptures such as trains, boats and castles can be used for props. These items often appear in children’s books. Outdoor musical instruments also make a fun way for children to become involved in the story, as they offer an opportunity to add sound effects.
An outdoor performance area such as a Star Stage provides an opportunity for children to act out parts from book or scripts, developing storytelling even further. Children can imagine themselves as their favourite fictional character or share their own stories with one another.
Hand Made Places specialises in manufacturing school playground equipment to encourage learning through play. The range includes products suitable for all age groups including Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 covering all areas of the curriculum.
Hand Made Places are currently offering 10% off its Storytelling range to help you prepare for World Book Day on 2 March 2017.
