What is it?

With recent DfE announcements, a new Reading Framework and a focus from Ofsted on phonics, you might be thinking about whether your current phonics provision is working for your school. There’s no need to make any immediate, drastic changes if you already have high-quality phonics provision, but if you are reviewing what you do, we can help. At Oxford, we are committed to ensuring every child learns to read, so we’ve carefully created our phonics offering to support you and your school in achieving this.

Whatever your school’s phonics needs, we have the solution. Each of our DfE validated systematic synthetic phonics teaching programmes with their high-quality professional development, offers a different approach that you can teach with confidence.

Our wide range of finely levelled decodable books, including a comprehensive Letters and Sounds eBook Library, are closely aligned to children’s developing phonics knowledge within the programmes, to support reading progress and build confidence.

And, if you are following Letters and Sounds as the basis of your teaching programme already, you will be able to closely align your teaching with children’s phonics practice.

Read Write Inc Phonics

This offers a complete literacy programme, developed by renowned phonics expert Ruth Miskin, and is used in over 5,000 UK primary schools.

Its unique progression, with associated resources and decodable books, teaches children in regularly reviewed, ability based groups to secure sounding and blending skills before they read the books.

Floppy’s Phonics Teaching Programme

This has been developed with respected phonics expert Debbie Hepplewhite based on her comprehensive alphabetic code and features the familiar characters, Biff, Chip and Kipper.

The programme provides practical classroom resources, Sounds Books for teaching and decodable readers from Floppy’s Phonics Fiction and Oxford Reading Tree Traditional Tales.

It is designed for whole-class teaching and offers you flexibility around pace and timetabling.

Essential Letters and Sounds

ELS is a brand new, easy-to-use phonics programme that follows the original Letters and Sounds progression.

It provides a straightforward, consistent approach to phonics that keeps routines simple to reduce cognitive load, so that all children learn to read well quickly.

The programme has been developed with specialist teachers from one of the Department for Education’s English Hubs, the Knowledge Schools Trust, and works with decodable books you may already have in your classroom

“We know how vital early reading success is so we are led by a shared mission to help all children learn to read and to enjoy reading, and to support teachers in achieving this goal”

Andrea Quincey
Director for primary literacy at Oxford University Press
