Love Writing with the Collins Big Cat Writing Competition

Let your pupils’ imaginations run free with a global writing competition run by the popular reading programme, Collins Big Cat, a whole-school reading programme supporting every child on their reading journey from early phonic development to fluent reading.

Collins aims to help raise achievement in primary writing and promote writing for pleasure with this competition, whilst offering fantastic prizes.

The competition is looking for a 300-500-word children’s story on the theme of bravery and courage within two categories: Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.

It is completely free to enter, and is available for schools to take part in eight regions across the globe: Africa, Americas, Asia, Australasia, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, UK and Ireland.

Schools can submit up to two entries each, one per age category. The competition will consist of a regional final where one regional finalist school will be chosen in each of the eight regions.

The regional finalists will be shortlisted to compete for the Grand Final prizes where one overall winner will be chosen per age category.

The regional finalists’ prizes are as follows:

  • Story published on the Collins website
  • Collins Big Cat goodie bag filled with books related to the bravery and courage theme
  • £200 worth of Collins books
  • Engraved shield

As well as the regional finalists’ prize, the Grand Final Winners will also receive a trophy for their school and have their winning stories transformed into a video, read aloud by a Collins Big Cat author.

The winners will be selected by award-winning authors Chris Bradford and Joanna Nadin.

Free downloadable teaching resources, including lesson plans and worksheets, are available to support the competition in schools and to educate pupils on the writing process.

The competition launches on Monday 10 September and closes on Friday 21 December 2018. Winners will be announced in February 2019.

Schools can find out more and register their interest by visiting collins.co.uk/BigCatWritingCompetition.
