30 Second Briefing

A collaboration between digital investment platform Wealthify and financial education charity Young Enterprise, Future Skills is a free online resource that helps teachers help 16- to 18-year-olds form positive lifelong financial habits.

From understanding what to do with Child Trust Funds to setting achievable goals, Future Skills enlists the help of viral TikTok stars Maddie Grace Jepson and Kyron Hamilton to deliver engaging classroom content.

1. Created with teachers’ needs in mind

While developing Future Skills, Wealthify worked with Young Enterprise to survey and interview over 100 UK teachers of 16- to 18-year-olds, to understand the barriers they face in teaching financial education (which included sourcing appropriate teaching materials, meeting the needs of different learners, and a lack of high-quality resources).

That’s why Future Skills was designed specifically to overcome these barriers, creating financial education resources that are:

  • Free and easy to access and download for quick classroom delivery
  • Full of bitesize content that can be tailored according to the time you have
  • Fully pre-planned with detailed lesson plans

2. Teaches students about key financial topics

Whether your students are planning on going to uni, straight to work, or taking a gap year, Future Skills can help them take control of their finances both now and in the future, thanks to the following four modules:

Module 1: Coming of Age
Students will learn what a Child Trust Fund is, whether they’re eligible for one – and how they can claim it.

Module 2: Planning What You Want from Your Money
Students get to grips with making financial choices and goals.

Module 3: Making the Most of a Lump Sum
Explores the different ways students can use a lump sum of money, including saving and investing.

Module 4: Good Money Habits for Life
Students learn about budgeting and saving to help achieve financial goals and resilience.

3. Video and influencer-led content

In this social media age, video content and influencers are an integral part of everyday life for teenagers. That’s why Future Skills combines both, with TikTok sensations Maddie Grace Jepson and Kyron Hamilton fronting The Bread Show: a light-hearted, fictional financial news show that delivers educational content in a way that’s engaging, relevant, and memorable.

“The Bread Show videos are smart, funny, and engaging. They also manage to communicate financial topics both quickly and effectively.”

4. Accredited by Young Enterprise

Future Skills has received Young Enterprise’s Financial Education Quality Mark, with one of their Quality Mark Assessors saying:

“The Bread Show videos are smart, funny, and engaging. They also manage to communicate financial topics both quickly and effectively.”

5. Prize draw worth £2,100!

As part of Future Skills, Wealthify is also giving students the chance to win £2,100 (the average value of a matured Child Trust Fund that has yet to be claimed) in a prize draw.

There will be three prize draws to win £2,100, one per school term. Entrants can only enter one of the three draws.

Closing dates for the draws are 23:59 on 11 December 2023, 25 March 2024, and 15 July 2024. Entrants must be aged 16–18 at the time of entry. Terms and conditions apply.
