The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) has announced that it will be launching the new CLPE Reading and Writing Scales at next week’s Literacy Beyond Levels conference.

The CLPE Reading and Scales first emerged over 30 years ago, and went on to inform language and literacy records in primaries across the UK throughout the 80s and 90s after being published in the CLPE Primary Language Record.

The new Scales were developed with input from the United Kingdom Literacy Association, English & Media Centre, National Association of Advisors in English and the National Association for the Teaching of English – with the aim of supporting and building on teachers’ knowledge of literacy development in a manner suitable to address the demands of a 21st cenrury classroom.

According to CLPE Chief Executive, Louise Johns-Shepherd, “By publishing the Scales we want to give teachers in classrooms the knowledge and resources to support children to become confident, happy and enthusiastic readers and writers.

‘We are delighted to be working in partnership with the other national literacy organisations, using our collective knowledge and capacity to provide the profession with a supportive set of materials that show how progress and achievement doesn’t have to be defined by a set of numbers or tick boxes.”

The CLPE Reading and Writing Scales will be available as free downloads from the CLPE’s website, as well as from the aforementioned partner organisations, from Monday February 8th onwards, to coincide the Literacy Beyond Levels conference. It will also be possible for teachers to easily access the scales while in the classroom and elsewhere via an iOS and Android due to launch the same day.
