Letters and numbers are obviously a fundamental building block of a child’s journey into communication, so it’s always handy to have a huge variety of fun ideas that will help familiarise children with them.

So, that said, here are a few of our favourites.

1 Train track letters

All aboard! Making train tracks has been a popular pastime for decades, so why not use the pieces to make letters and numbers?

Head to Carrie Isaac’s website to find out more.

2 Making marks disappear

OK, so technically this is the opposite of mark making as you’re making marks disappear, but you get the point.

Click on Nurture Store for this activity.

3 Stick writing

Sticks, stones, mud and the great outdoors, always a good combo. Making Boys Men has some top ideas for making the most of your natural environment.

4. Chalks and rocks

A much more suited partnership than chalk and cheese; get your playground chalks out, collect some stones and let kids loose.

Go to And Next Comes L for details.

5. Mess-free painting

Similar to the freezer bag activity, this one makes use of the stunning effect of natural light shining through the mix of colours. Also, it looks a bit like kids are painting the windows which is sure to turn some heads outside.
